Got the Engine Now to Order the Boat

Many thanks to all of you who helped me decide between the Honwave T38ie 3 and the Excell Sib. I wanted to try and buy an engine before I ordered the Sib.

Reading several other posts on here it seemed to me that the Tohatsu 9.8 two stroke outboard might be a good option for Power v weight and have been keeping an eye on ebay etc for a couple of days and one came up for sale yesterday and I picked it up today. I was looking at new but was told that is basically illegal for pleasure use which of course my use will be.

The one I bought is I am told a standard shaft and I hope this is the correct one for the Honwave.

I was also wondering if the one I have bought has the correct propeller because it is curiously white when the rest of the engine is all black.

Below are a few pics of the engine and the propeller.

I would be pleased if people on here can advise if I have the correct engine for the Honwave T38IE 3 which I intend to order very soon

You're lucky to find one of those in a hedge!

Holy grail of 10hp motors due to their light weight. I run one the same.

Yes they should have a white prop at that age... only the very new ones have a black prop.

Re suitability for a T38. I use the same motor with my V floor 3.8m SIB for the specific reason an age related shoulder problem means anything heavier is an unwise lift. But ideally a 3.8 will go better with a 15/20hp... particularly if more than two up.

Johnson / Evinrude 9.9 & 15 HP's weigh about 70 to 80lbs , and have a displacement of 216 and 255 cubic centimeters depending on the model, year of manufacture ect

If you are that lucky to have found a Tohatsu 9.8 after searching on ebay for a "whole" couple of days, I would seriously give up the day job and become a professional gambler, with your luck you won't lose

Obviously that one is branded Nissan but looking at your pictures and having looked at mine carefully inside they look very much the same. Mine is 2006 stamped on the plate where yours is 2000.

As to value I have no idea in Canada but I paid £1200 here in the UK.

When I was looking to buy there were new ones for sale but not legal for pleasure use in the U.K. so they must still be making them

Looks a bit chilly for boating your end

Prop Maximization.-

Will need to go for a prop maximization towards a less pitch prop to get the max HP out of that nice clean motor specially if will be constantly boating with more than 2 up. What's the number stamped on that prop ? Factory delivered props are medium pitched ones, only good for break in purposes, once done need to install an appropriate prop for the motor to rev around its max 6 K wot rpm factory stated as usually loaded. For that purpose will need to install an induction type tach...

Happy Boating

Hard pass on the 9.8

255cc vs 169cc

70lb vs 57lb

...downgrading (for me) is like night and day
