Cornwall in a sib

Hello. I have been Sibing for 6 years (lake district, Croatia and France). The family and I are down in Fowey in May for a week and taking our Sib. Can I please ask the etiquette for tieing up in harbours? We would like to visit Fowey, mevagissey, polperro for a couple of hours to have a look around/ something to eat. Croatia/France have signs on the harbour walls saying visitor mooring, is this same?

Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Fowey is a brilliant sibbing area. You will need to contact the harbourmaster's office to pay dues for the period of your stay and they will post you a sticker. It's about £50 for a week which includes all your launch/recovery. They should send a copy of the harbour guide if you ask. There are plentiful visitor pontoons, it's a good area for them.

To use the pontoons you do need your SIB to have its name and the harbour dues sticker displayed. If not they can remove your boat and charge £90 to give it back! You are allowed a 12hr stay on the pontoon if 3.65m or less, 6hrs if between 3.65m and 5m.

Tie up at any of the pontoons mentioned below just using minimal space, you will see which are the dinghy areas from the others already there. Really bad form to put a dinghy on the outer parts of pontoons where a larger craft might find a space.

Also bad form to mistake the Royal Fowey Yacht Club pontoon for a public one... and never get in the way of the Polruan ferry at Whitehouse Quay, Fowey or the Polruan end.

Pontoons that come to mind are...

Off North St where the all weather lifeboat is tied up, next to Hank's Seafood Cabin.

Upriver from there Penmarlam quay pontoons with the Quay Cafe at the top of the slip and toilets a minute walk further on.

Downriver from the lifeboat there's a pontoon at Albert Quay where the Harbour office is situated and the best access to town shops.

Across the river there is the pontoon at Polruan Quay with the toilets and Lugger Inn adj.

Thanks for this. Great help. I have spoke to harbour master and already paid for launch/ recovery for the week at Penmarlam quay. Never mentioned about a sticker however assume I will get that when I arrive.

Yes I'd phone/email again and ask re the sticker. You'd be unlucky to get picked up for non-display but what a pain to be down the town end and find they'd towed when you return to the pontoon after food/shopping.

Hi jnr12 and welcome to the forum,

This thread may help:-

https://www.rib.net/forum/f50/fowey-90121.html

Polpero & Looe are very tidal.

I may have been lucky in Polpero but one of the local fishing boats let me tie up alongside his boat.

Looe has a strong current both ways on the river. The visitor moorings are (as you enter the harbour) on the left hand side between two white marker boards (not the easiest to see) Make sure you have fenders!
If you have transom wheels and you haven't got a dog, it may be easier to land on the beach.

Diane has just reminded me that the 2nd time we went to Polpero we landed on the beach (transom wheels) a couple of hours after high tide, the beach is just outside the harbour wall on the left. We had lunch and stayed a couple of hours.

At Fowey the easiest pontoon was the one just outside the harbour masters office, loads of places to eat in Fowey.

A nice short trip with a lunch stop was to Polkerris. Both the Rashliegh Inn & Sam's did a very good lunch (may have changed, it was a few years ago!)
If you don't have transom wheels, you can anchor in the sheltered harbour and use anchor bungee.

Have a good holiday.
