I'd say start by looking at the ebay/PayPal buyer seller agreement small print and see what your rights are. I've looked before and I think boats and engines come under some exemptions. Normally I'd say you can get a good idea of an engines condition from photos and videos from the seller. Most are willing to provide or have them saved ready to send to serious buyers.

Personally I like to see it in the flesh photo angles can be desiving not picking up defects also I want to hear it put it in and out of gear even then you might not see everything but better than buying from long range it's an important piece of kit needs to be right.

your always better to see them running and get the seller to do a start it up in water as it saves any hassle further down the road and you can see how well they start up from cold etc oil leaks no water out the tell tale it covers both the seller and the buyer

also do a compression check on the cylinder(s) That can save later heartaches and headaches.

There are certain e bay sellers to totally avoid as have a history of doing the dirty. I would never buy one un seen also unless it was from one of my very trusted dealerships

Engines are likely to be excluded from eBay/PayPal buyer protection. Unfortunately there is a very prevalent eBay seller in Cambridge who has a terrible reputation here and he probably has half the outboards/parts on eBay...

I bought an outboard from a individual eBay seller but I went to see it near London, to see it running and condition and I stay in Edinburgh so a wee bit of travelling to see the outboard will save you buying a lemon

What's your budget?
2 stroke or 4 stroke - also what HP you looking for.
Could kindly ask and see if there is any member on here nearby that could have a look at it for you?

I phoned ebay and was told its under ebay guarantee so i bought it today its a 1999 25hp johnson 2stroke short shaft its in very clean condition for age minus a few minor scratches on the plastics i gave £550 for it

Hopefully it will push the quicksiler 4.3 along nicely

I will get some pics up when it comes and a vid of it running

Good stuff.
Hope it serves you well - 25hp will push you along nicely.
My first outboard was a Johnson, engine ran well and started first time, every time.
Happy boating

If it's a new one everything should be fine, but as previous messages check eBay/Paypal money back on them
