9.9 outboards

Hi all,
Advise required please.
After reviewing 9.9hp outboards I'm considering either a new Mercury or a Yamaha. The Yamaha is £150 more than Mercury but is it worth the additional funds?

Either of these (plus the Suzuki or Honda) will do the job so it's very much down to personal choice. But there are small differences that might be important to you.

I think the Mercury will have the integrated throttle and gearchange which not everyone likes. The Yamaha has a separate lever on the tiller which is a better bet for most folks.

Perhaps the best feature of the Yamaha is it can be transported on either side or its back... most of the others can only travel on one side and this can be a nuisance.

Many folks will value the Yamaha name even if in truth all these small outboards are very reliable... so it might hold a slightly higher resale in future.

Have you tried the 310 with a 10hp yet? Even though it's a hard hull, it might be worth testing it afloat with your expected load, prior to buying a new motor. If you don't want to plane or boat solo then disregard the above.

EDIT - just checked and I see they are rated for 10hp max - so I guess they must perform well enough with that power?

Is there much difference in either weight or warranty?

Was it Suzuki doing 5 year warranty promo recently? https://www.suzuki-marine.co.uk/mari...zuki/warranty/

On paper the Suzuki looks very very similar to the Mercury ....., if price was the same I think a 5 year warranty could swing it for me anyway!

Probably bigger CC - gonna give a lot more grunt from standing start. The 9.8 Tohatsu is a very small block and needs a good run to get up to speed! Now, if you were to challenge someone to a race, carrying the respective engines, I bet the Tohatsu guy will be quicker...

I'd check out how they both operate and which you prefer. Certainly on the older 15hp Merc/Mariner I much prefer it in operation to the Yam as it has a brilliant 'one handed' tilt/trim/lift mechanism and a throttle operated gear shift.

Ha ha . We did have a race . It was slower on the uptake and after 100 yards or so the yam was pulling away. Was a complete surprise i have to admit Wilk

When I said carrying, I meant over the shoulder, not on a transom...

Hi all,
Thanks for all the comments.
Ordered the Yamaha today based on the fact that you can lie it on 3 sides as I bound to forget at some stage with the other brands and lie it on the wrong side. Also the clean flush system on the yam means I don't have to keep filling buckets of water or run the engine as their flush system connects directly to the hose pipe.
Can wait to try it out and feed back the results.
Found a you tube video with what appears to be the same boat but under a different name.
West marine Compact rib 310
