Tool box on Trailer

can anyone recommend a make of large tool box that can be bolted to a trailer. it needs to be at least 80cm long and 40high or wide.

i had a blow out on the weekend and was totally unprepared for it. No jack strong enough etc so had to call on the local garage to come out and help. Next time i will be carrying a large trolly jack, correct socket set and impact driver but want to keep it with the trailer rather than the boot of the car. thanks

Bear in mind that if you put this on your drawbar it’s going to send the nose weight through the roof. You might have to reshuffle the trailer.

Your going to leave all that on a trailer? Surely one socket a breaker bar and small bottle jack (Block of wood) is all that is needed for a road side wheel change ?

yep me too bit overkill IMO i put mine in a dry container 350 x 200 screw lid jack, spanner, spare hub, grease, rag spare on the draw bar

thats a good point. i was planning on putting it on the side opposite the winch.

Easily lift it And weighs 5kg used ones not much larger for HGV’s just needs some pumping, your not trying to lift it to the sky just enough to change the wheel block of wood helps especially on loose ground (stops or at least helps stops the jack sinking into the ground ideally carry a jacking pad but solid scrap of timber works too

You can also get some pretty monster compact bottle jacks. For the simplicity of a bottle jack compared to rarely used trolley jack it’s got to be safer?

Reference nose weight by adding a tool box, I don’t think it would make a blind bit of difference.

Re. What the others have said Re. Jacks. Aldi were selling 5t bottle jacks for £15 recently. I bought one for exactly the same reason as the OP. Brilliant bit of kit, lifts the Boat & Van (2950kg) no problem. I think a trolley jack would be a hinderance at the side of the road, they need a nice flat smooth area to operate on. Otherwise you will be lifting on the piss.

Aldi bottle jacks [emoji106] I’ve three now [emoji1] one lives in the van to Jack it or the trailer two at home to lift the trailer or boat as needed far far better than a trolley jack. I have that as well and never get it out

You tow 6t of boat with a car? Must be one heck of a car, with a big block.

Instead of a hydraulic jack I found my Chevy K2500 Suburban's jack worked perfectly fine. No oil to leak, and it was pretty light weight. They can be purchased from Ebay or a wrecking yard for cheap. Carried a 4 way to break the lugs loose on just about everything.

Something like this jack or a HD scissors jack.


Also I am a firm believer in carrying extra ratcheting straps in my tow vehicle. That way if a bearing blows, or double flats, etc, one of the axle sides can just be tied up, and continue on our way. One of the most used items I carry is a small 12volt compressor and a high quality plug kit. Although people love to hate plugs, they are effective 99% of the time and can be installed in a few minutes. Mini-spares suck!

Any truck tool box will work. U-bolts could be bolted from the bottom up. The weight of it won't make much of a difference. Biggest fear should be theft as everything seems to get "nicked" over there, or so I read all the time on here. Tool boxes are not very secure.

A bit over the top perhaps ? ,,,, but holds my wheel clamp, washdown kit, spare bulbs & ratchet straps , jack .....

Secure and weatherproof - any size, shape . Not particularly cheap but neither is your outfit by the looks of it :-) decent value

Only added fixed submersible lights, my old electric winch ,,, and two decent spare wheel carriers. Otherwise is is the standard R2/1800 EL

Toolbox on trailer?
Adds weight to the trailer, especially important if you want to move your trailer around your home without having to attach a vehicle.

Left on your trailer when you go out, opportunity for theft. And I carry it in my car as I don't take my boat to the ramp without it.

Most cars are equipped with a crap jack anyway so I always carry a good quality bottle jack.

You don't need a socket set to get a wheel off, you use a wheel brace. Or, one socket and a bar.

I also carry an axle stand, piece of plank for jacking on soft sand and a couple of wheel chocks to prevent the car rolling.

I also carry my stuff in a bag, toolboxes rattle and bang. The bag is tied to a restraint loop so the gear doesn't join me in a case of a collision.

nice set up. I will be adding a second spare wheel this winter along with the tool box.
