"My brakes aren't working very well, can you have a look?..."

They're the best example of lack of maintenance I've seen in a while

Where's best to buy shoes for knott hubs on a roller coaster Ben & how do I identify 203x40 or 200x50.

I assume 40 / 50 mm is width so don't have to worry about 203 or 200 as only see 203/40 or 200/50 on ebay...

Thanks in advance

Bit of WD-40 should take care of it.

That's actually pretty impressive. I had a brake shoe fall apart once (red hot drum and flames and all kinds of drama); the innards didn't look anywhere near that bad.

Hi Daniel

Yup, the easiest way is to measure the width of the shoes you have, or the depth of the drum face, that the shoes push against.

3mm is quite easy to lose on a drum - especially a boat trailer one that's been dunked a bit!

Should be plenty of places on line, if not give me a shout, they're always in stock. Don't pay more than £50 for an axle set (i.e. two pairs of shoes and two sets of springs: enough to do a complete single axle).

Have a look in the trailer stickies thread - I put a couple of vids up in there (via YouTube) on how to strip and re-fit Knott shoes.

All the best, Ben

my trailer brakes are pants! i have recently bought the trailer with my boat! and in order for it to be towed home from belgium, some belgian genius wedged the trailer to the furthest "off" position, drilled a hole and wedged a fat alan key in the hole!! its magical and wonderful and utter utter "£$% i dare not take the wheels off to look yet!!!

Depends on axle manufacturer I suspect but 203x40 are usually fitted on 1300kg axles and 200x50 on 1500kg axles. There should be a plate on the axle telling you who made it and the gross weight it can handle. We use M&E axles which follow this convention.
But all about to change as the 203x40 are being phased out and the 200x50 will be fitted to new axles. Spares will still be available though...

We recently bought a secondhand trailer which had had a recent service. No brakes shoes at all! nothing, nadder, zilch!!!

Impressive.
Suggest you grab them while you can.
Judging by some of their previous purchases the Tate Modern/Charles Saatchi might give you a couple of million for your piece of mechanical artwork

Jeff, I'll check tommorow. I need to put shoes in my ballistic trailer later this month so chances are they'll be the larger knott too. How much you asking / can you post down?

Did the owner of that sorry mess dredge the trailer from the bottom of the Bristol Channel?

Wire brush and a couple of coats of Hammerite should do it!
