440nm@1900 rpm. As has allready been said. All cars have good and bad points. I personally like LR, which is why I used to instuct on them and now sell em. But the Landcruiser / Amazon is a very capable motor and highly rated by me. The new breed of LR is laden with technology, which some like and some dont.

Both brands are very good tow cars

Don't get me wrong the Toyota Amazon is a great vehicle - the ONLY one of the Japs I would consider but LR have raised the anti so much now it just can't compete.

Drove the disco 3 with this 2.7 and an auto box and was shocked at how well (quick) it went. The V6 is a very quiet and smooth motor, I was actually more taken with this than the Range Rover with the V8 petrol. Did think that 2.7L and two something tones was going to be a bit tedious did not realise it had so much torque, and as a wise man once said.
“boys talk of bhp, men talk of torque”

speaking of which why don’t outboard manufacturers quote the torque output as in many instances this could be more relevant than bhp?

To be honest I was suprised as well - it is a lovely engine - very smooth and un diesel like. The V8 diesel must be incredible.

The one thing the Toyotas have in their favour is reliability. And as certain other manufacturers continue to make their products too complicated for dealers to understand and progressively less reliable as well, that shouldn't be underestimated...

I still have a Discovery 2 for several reasons

I agree the Disco II is probably the ultimate - about as sophisticated as beam axles will ever get on road. And nothing will beat a beam off road.

Remember though it's NOT just LR that are going this way - they are all at it. BMW being the worst culprits. The Amazon engine is much simpler but I will bet it won't be around much longer - it will be ditched in favour of a new high tech engine!!!

My mate with the Cayenne runs a haulage company - he has a mix of Scanias and Mercs on his fleet - the best of them all are the older Scanias with no fancy electrics. They were promised much better economy with the new engines - they still get 8mpg!!!

Well Gavin to save you the trouble - videos are so much more interesting!!!

I didn't realise a Toyota could suffer a mechanical failiure...

They don't like water much either!!!

And as for mud.....

And the Top Gear with the old Landie beating them all.

I am lucky I am not new Labour, as you have an adversion to them aswell as the Irish, sure its only a few weeks ago you were blaming the IRA, on trying to bomb London recently, but again your missing the point,
We are talking about muscle here, grunt if you will, hence the links to Toyota,
The last thing we want is somebody hitching a rib up to a Landy on a steep slip, and the rib pulling the whole lot in , its grunt we need here, like a 4l diesel Toyota

Or a new Disco 3 which actually has MORE torque!!!

I haven't had much trouble with my Discovery 300tdi either - even managed to tow a 5.5 ton dumper truck no problem!!!

I also saw an old Police Range Rover pulling a 38 ton lorry off the M4 without too much trouble - I don't think Land rover's towing abilities have ever been in much doubt with people who actually use them!!!

Landrover Has Done It Again

This was taken from the Initial Quality Survey 2007

Landrover, Mercedes-Benz and Saab showed the most improvement since 2006. However, while Land Rover vehicles improved by 34 PP100, the brand still remains last with the most problems per 100 vehicles. Among non-premium brands, Kia saw the largest improvement in position, moving from 24th to 12th since 2006.

From the JD Power Survey

Rated

10 Land Rover Discovery
Rating 78.4%
Overall ranking 70th=
Dreadful reliability was the main bugbear for the Discovery. Almost half had engine problems, and 71% suffered faults with the running gear.

Reliability apart, the Discovery was otherwise well liked.

11 Land Rover Freelander
Rating 76.2%
Overall ranking 95th=
A poor eleventh place for the Freelander this year. Owners disliked its looks, engine, transmission and interior.

http://www.rangerovers.net/news/0608lastagain.html

Interesting here the reference to Toyota.

Quote Land Rover owners reported 438 problems per 100 vehicles, while Saab owners reported 326. Owners of top-rated Toyota vehicles reported only 136.

Least Reliable car Forbes magazine

http://www.rangerovers.net/news/index.html#least

This from What Car
All in all, the Freelander was the fifth-least-dependable car in our annual reliability survey. For every 100 Freelanders, 55 had something go wrong. Owners also confirm that they're unhappy in our JD Power Customer Satisfaction survey, with Land Rover coming 29th out of a field of 32.

This from roadtestreports.co.uk

TD6 Vogue
Most unreliable car I have ever owned, I drove seven different courtesy cars in 9 months, Spent half my time back and forward to the main agent. The inside is well finished and the car looks well but never buy one that is not under manufacturers warranty unless you have a spare grand a month for repairs. Sold the car after 9 months and lost £30,000 but at least its gone New Audi tdi Q7 on order.

A grand a month for repairs did he say

I have found the reason Landies are heavy on fuel, they spill it out from 2006/07 fuel tanks

http://www.trucktrend.com/2006/100/l...lls/55305.html

I was slated here last year about posting Landrover Faults which resulted in parked vehicles moving.

well here is the recall notice

http://www.trucktrend.com/2006/100/l...lls/37676.html

http://www.trucktrend.com/2006/100/l...lls/63552.html

These vehicles can only be described as enthusasist vehicles, not reliable , formidable tow vehicles.
