lights on bikes uk law exemption

Watching one of those ,, Night watch,, t/v programs late last night and it was about a couple of motorcyle cops in Devon doing routine traffic stuff ,when one of them had to deal with a guy on a super bike that had no lights fitted to it ,they called out one of the police bikers who was also a traffic inspecter and after about an hour looking through his manuals he decides that owing to a loop hole in the law ,he has no case to answer and the superbiker can go on his way as bikes dont need lights if not fitted during daylight hours ,,just wondering what or if any ribnetters new of such thing,,i would have though all motor vehicles required lights even in day light hour owing to fog/bad viz ect .,,i know boats on trailer dident need forward facing lights at one time if trailed in daylight hours but still needed normal ones .

No lights required during daylight hours for a single seater Enduro motorcycle. As far as I recall there are specific reg's that make a bike an Enduro, definately doesn't apply to a superbike.
Bit wooly on this, was years ago.

You can get daytime MOTs which means you don't need lights.

thats basically right, it does not have to have lights if used in the day time, the time was 1/2 hour after sunrise and 1/2 hour before sunset was the legal bit (likely to have changed)

The non requirement for lights on a motorcycle has been in place since the year dot so I'm really concerned police motorcyclists are not aware of it.

Seen that episode, it's true about the daylight MOT stuff, I remember shouting at the TV at the time it would be dark soon anyway, made me wonder if they did it deliberately...

I'd have told them politely that they were detaining me illegally and ridden off. I've threatened it before when they've taken the mick. I know to the letter of the law if I'm right or wrong .If they want to push it they can arrest me and face some serious poo when I lodge an official complaint.

I did drive off once when I was younger, kept getting stopped all the time with no good reason, in the the end I got annoyed and ignored the blue lights, they boxed me in with cars and a bike thrown in for good measure. Rifled through the car, went mental because I didn't stop etc....then let me go and never did charge me with anything......
Didn't get stopped again for years.
Bizarre....

Think biggest piss take for me was when i was driving a large truck with a ex offshore rib on the back on the m62 motorway way back in the early 1980s ,,road really quiet, trundeling on not speeding when a police car comes past me,,, pulls in front,,,slows down and the blue lights go on ,i pulls into the hard shoulder and waits wondering whats wrong expecting the boats sliding off the back or something when they drive off ,this happens 2 more times when on the 3 i ran up to the police car and say whats wrong ,,they just said oh no problems were training this new guy ,,
