Choosing Number plates for New Car

Does anyone know if when buying a new car, is there an option in selecting your own number plate from a list or requesting a specific one?

Make a point of asking to see the list before you buy the car.
then it can be marked as set aside for you.

I guess this list is made up of the prefixes suitable for the area? It's a shame as they are all craps ones. Does anyone know if there are there any routes I can take to choose from different area's without going to a dealer from across the country?

no can do mate, the only thing maybe is to buy a number on retention and let the dealer pay for the transfer, my RIB number plates came from northern ireland and were cheap when i got them but i think they've cottoned on what a RIB is and pushed the prices up, still worth a look also as it's still a part of uk you might be able to go to dvlc and search there data base
