20k for 4x4 tow vehicle

Evening all,
Here is a nice hypothetically question - Looking for a sub 20k 4x4 tow vehicle but it would need to fit a few criteria that could be a bit screwy so your help would be useful;

Essential -
  • Sub 20k,
  • 4x4 for slipways,
  • Low road tax to keep long term costs down,
  • Low insurance to keep long term costs down,
  • Low speed - don't want it to get wrecked when it's loaned to others,
  • Seating for 5,
  • be able to tow a Ribcraft 585,
  • Some warranty remaining,
  • Low maintenance costs.

Desirable -
  • UK built
  • Front towbar can be fitted
  • Winch can be fitted

I've looked at Landrover 110 Utility, Disco 3, Mitsubishi L200 with truckman back. Am I missing any other options??

Chris

Why would you be looking at massively over-specced vehicles to tow a 585? Are you thinking you might have to tow bigger occasionally?

I'd be looking at something like a decent late Fronty, or Isuzu trooper/crewcab pickup if others are going to be borrowing it. Remaining warranty (for the short period you'd have) wouldn't even factor into buying it for me.

if you don't need the fancy 4wd then a Freelander is a great tow car, and the newer ones are good motors, cheaper to run than defenders, discos etc but well able to tow upto 2t

Agreed - I tow a 5.3m Ribcraft a few times a month - 170mile round trip - launch and recover - Suzuki Grand Vitara 1.9DDiS - perfect tow vehicle with real 4x4 capability if you need it. A good 2010 plate will be sub 10K.

Half that budget will get you a really nice double cab pickup.
