Big Bear Lake

Now I know why I live in California!!
Ok it's got it's drawbacks, but then again it has it's perks.
Like a weeks vacation early October,at Big Bear Lake just east of Los Angeles (at an altitude of over 7,000ft,) Clear blue skies and fresh mountain air. (just had to remember to let the air out of the RIB halfway up)
Deserted Lake (not quite ski season yet ) with temps in the mid 60's and the trout biting
Just must remember my dock lines next time as the missus gave me abuse when I asked her if she did "pole dances" also.
cheers Dal

Must say we like our trout pretty plain. Some sea salt sprinkled inside and wrapped in wet newspaper. Bake for 15 to 20 mins. Peel offf the newspaper and off comes the skin. Hmmm ;add some fresh asparagus and new potatoes and wash down with a nice white wine. Tough life
My two lads were bringing them in fast and furious ,much to the amazement of the "real fishermen" there. No big secret;just very light tackle, a small float and some pretty frisky worms.
Came back with an ice chest with about 30 lbs of trout

Biggles; the lakefront houses are scary!!! My wife went and got some real estate brochures,to get some ideas. The range was huge ,from $150,000 for a small cabin on the slopes to $1.5miliion and up for one of these "showplace "lakefront properties. We went round the whole lake (about 12miles) in the RIB ,just checking out the "dream homes" and checking out our retirement choices
I have some photos of our favorites and also some of the prices they were asking. Will dig a few out tommorow for you; for a laugh.
cheers Dal

or
http://www.bigbearexecutives.com/

Three of my favorites below All have their own docks.

As its only 1 1/2 hrs from LA. a lot of the rich and famous have winter homes up here and at Lake Arrowhead. Must be nice

Stunning houses a bit inland are about $400,000 - that's the price of a semi in Swansea!!! $1.5million is about £750,000 which will buy you my mates house in Neath which is currently up for sale..........

Talking of which he owns a house in Sarasota Florida which is like a palace and cost him about $500,000 - would be about £2 million here!!!

Then again our houses will still be standing after 144mph winds - or the older ones will.......

Neath or Big Bear? Let me think about that No disrespect intended

Biggles, the house on the right side of the 3 in the photo, just went for about $2m
http://www.bigbearexecutives.com/realestate.php
Is in a particulary nice spot called "Boulder bay."
Below is the bay with the house just to the left.
Waterevels are about 5 ft below norm due to several years of low snow fall. You can see their docks are almost high and dry.
They took the sign down as we were leaving
Oh well, will have to look for another now

cheers Dal

The area and the houses are stunning but as I said the standards of construction etc are scary in the USA - God help you in a fire or a really big storm - they are nearly all built of wood.

Yes obviously it's a nicer place than Neath - that's the point I was trying to make - how stupid British property prices are - then again there's far more land in the USA.

firestorms

Codders, you must be psychic
Huge fire storms in Southern California at the moment.!!!
Fire between Big Bear and Arrowhead right along the road we just travelled.
Also 2 big fires in San Diego, the one just 2 miles away from us at the moment.Just keeping our fingers crossed that the wind doesn't change direction else we will be right in its way.Huge plume of brown smoke over the moutain to the south east of us.
Busines's closed and evacuating a 1/4 million people from the area.
So Neath sounds pretty good after all.
Hope to talk to you all soon
cheers Dal

Hear, hear. I had an email from a friend yesterday... she lost her house and her office building in one day. Both were outside San Diego...
