VHF screen misting up again!

Hi guys, we're on our second Standard Horizon vhf radio replaced due to the screen misting up! This one is just over a year old & we're not sure about the warranty?
Anyone else had this misting up problem? I'm loathe to go for the same radio again, probably get an ICOM! Your thoughts greatly appreciated. Cheers

Thanks for that, I've been in contact with the company that sold it to us & as its under 3 years old they taken it back today. Whether it will get replaced or repaired, I'm not sure at present, but I'll update you soon.

Guys, recieved the radio back a little while ago. They repaired it under the 3 year warranty. Resealed it with gaskets I'm told. Lets see now if it happens again? ho-hum!

Hi there

Same experience as me - see post 5 here:

http://www.rib.net/forum/f37/which-f...-sh-59870.html

I've just given up now after replacement number 3 and will live with it until it gets unusable and then buy something other than a SH.

I can forgive the misting issue, it's the ignoring emails that put me off buying SH again. Emails were acknowledged and a reply promised, but then nothing. Strikes me there's insufficient staff in the UK to match what seems to be an attractive warranty, so will give someone else a chance.

PM me if you want any more info.

Good luck

Steve

If you guys are going to chuck a working VHF because of misting, then it may be worth cracking them open and inserting a pouch of dried silica beads in the works before resealing them. Voids the warranty, but it's worthless anyway, apparently. I did this with a Raymarine plotter a few years back and it worked a treat, at least for a couple of seasons...

I found misting a problem on both icom and Standard Horizon VHF's... on the last Vipermax we had one of the ICOM "Black Box" units.

IC-M400BB : BLACK BOX VHF/DSC MARINE TRANSCEIVER - Mounted VHF/DSC Marine Radio : Icom UK - two way radio transceivers, receivers and navigation products

This is the best solution for a rib IMO as the handset is self contained with the speaker so you can hold it up to your ear which is ideal when the wind is blowing... The screen on the handheld command Mic never misted up and could be removed when on a mooring.

Its not the cheapest solution but it certainly works !

I have to say, we had great service from Force 4 chandlery. After a phone call we had a quick turnaround of the damaged unit & free postage both ways! We,all see how long it stays dry inside?

I had great service too from Chandlery, Sailing Clothing & Boat Electronics | Gael Force Marine so no complaints about the retailer. Indeed without their help chasing the local SH sales rep I doubt I'd have got a reply from SH at all.

Sounds like an ICOM from Gaelforce will be the next radio :o)

I've got a SH PS-2000 (now discontinued) on my RIB. Same thing; a black box radio and command mic. Works well (though I use an external speaker rather than the speaker in the mic.)
