Used Electronics - MMSI change

Hi I just checked on vessel finder my boat details ‘Tean’ nothing. Call sign 2EEE6 nothing. MMSI 235084352 and this shows boat HJGHLAND FLING with my photo and call sign 2BYZ9 location Caribbean.

Checked on Ship Station website and it shows my details as being correct and HIGHLAND FLING (spelt correctly) call 2BYZ9 but MMSI 235081314

Checked ap Findship. This confirms Tean with all my details, in the Caribbean ( I am in the UK). Marine traffic shows various conflicting information too.

So what has happened – I changed all my electronics late last year -could you be using my old AIS or VHF?

Apologies to contact you on public forum but trying to resolve this issue

Thanks
John

Hopefully you just needed to work through all the different opinions to make up your own mind. Fwiw I said a lightweight aluminium rib like you've bought would be the best option for your tender duties in post #7 but didn't suggest a 2nd boat then. Hopefully your on your way to having the right setup for all your needs now.

I as a side note I think everyone is interested in the electronics issues in another post, Hopefully your sorting this by pm but I'm sure everyone would be interested to know what's gone on with the digital i'd's not least so we know how to avoid mistaken identity & how the mix up occurred, what piece of equipment triggered the mistaken identity. Hopefully you'll report back once its sorted

GRRRRR my long detailed reply just vanished

JohnB and i have been having a private conversation re the MMSI mix up

It would seem that he sold of lots of bits when he did an electronic upgrade one thing he sold was an ICOM MA-510TR AIS transducer he was told it was wiped clean before bing sold on (to me)

NOW I now know that even a Factory Reset does not delete the MMSI number AND it is NOT user changeable. So I physically installed it on Highland Fling then investigated how I could have it changed to Highland Fling's MMSI number. This can only be done by an ICOM technician with the correct software. Fortuitously one was less than a mile away so he reprogrammed it for me with all Highland Fling's information quickly and at a very reasonable cost.

Now when i was first installing it BUT before it was reprogrammed I was configuring all my Raymarine instruments to interface with this AIS box it is NEMA 2000 and my instrument backbone is SeaTalk NG. I assume that during this time the unit got polled and it responded thereby creating this MMSI confusion

ALL SORTED NOW!!!

Next time you log in, check the 'Keep me logged in' box, otherwise this POS forum software logs one out mid essay.

I've copied the above post into this thread for information. I was curious about the reason for the crossover and while the SIMPLE solution of a physical equipment swap was the reason, I was kinda leaning into war related AIS blah and server issues.

Remind me to K.I.S.S.!

As David says the issue has been resolved amicably and relatively easily. I renewed my chart plotter/VHF and AIS and received a trade in price on my old equipment. It seems this was then sold on and the factory reset was unsuccessful. David purchased the AIS in good faith, we both realised what had happened independently by which time David had it reprogrammed with the correct details. Good that we were able to communicate via this forum and hopefully we can both move on. Thanks to all, Jon

Thanks for the explanation, a weird sequence of events and a real coincidence that you both ended up on this forum to sort it out, shows how small the boating world realy is.

It was not a coincidence that they both ended up on this forum. The really weird coincidence was that Highland Fling, having not posted since joining Ribnet nearly 15 years ago, suddenly became active within a fortnight of his boat name being mentioned in another forum in connection with the AIS issue. The threads on both forums were active at the same time though the thread subjects, AIS on one and SIBS on the other, were totally unrelated.
The name "Highland Fling" is quite distinctive and someone😉 noticed the connection and informed JonB of the existence of the thread on this forum.
