Trouble with VHF

Has anyone had trouble with an Icom 401, I have been told recently that my transmissions recently can be a bit unclear and distorted even though I have a strong signal. anyone any Idea what it might be?

cheers

Mark

Unlikely to be the radio. The vast majority of TX problems can be traced to aeriel, cable connections or poor engine grounding giving a whining noise.

I'd check every connection, especially the co-ax links and any PL259 connections you have. Also check the mic connections and condition of that lead.

If all that fails to resolve the issue, it's beginning to look like the radio, but that would be unusual.

I'd go along with the aeriel, If the leads are ok, It could be the aeriel it's self

Do you get a clicking noise through the VHF with the engine running too?

Whilst the antenna may be at fault, do you flush the radio with fresh water?

You can get a build up of salt water in the mic hole that when it dries can cause this problem.

It can happen to all makes of radio's this is why it is a good idea to fulsh them after use.

Hi Jon,

I do wash it down but must admit do not specifically pay close attention to the mic, I will have a look this weekend and see.

thanks
