Yeh, I wrote one in C about 12 years ago doing exactly that.
Linked in with a trisponder and a depth sounder to enable 3d plotting of the sea floor.

It's pretty easy to do, you just need something that will configure, and then listen, on a serial port, then log it to a file (or re-process it as you want)

That looks good, better than I'd be able to knock up in an evening anyway.
If anyone dabbles in VB6 or excel VB script and the like, you can DIY using the MS Comm control.

Ohh thanks Guys. Yeah WJ you are right about Matt being asked to do it again. but I'll have a look at the toolkit first.

The tug I work on dumps aggregate spoil and the the eniro agency require us to record our position every twenty minutes,

the envorenment Agency or Maffii ( yeah yeah DEFRA) or some other bunch of penpushers require us to record our position on the water every twenty minutes. I't a pain in the ass driving the boat, resetting the timer, holding the torch, finding the pen changing the gps to position, watching the water talking on the VHF, listening to Stevie Ray Vaughn and talking to gArfie on the mobile it all gets a bit difficult.

So I thought if we automated the logging process and told gArfie to fkk off then it'd be a lot more fun

From the web page:
http://www.windmill.co.uk/rs232.html

"Windmill LabIML software ... is a universal driver for instruments that send or accept ASCII messages over RS232. It automatically feeds data from the instruments to Windows application software. You could, for example, show readings from a GPS receiver and a sonar in an Excel spreadsheet"

Rogue

Memory-Map will record a track either live from a GPS or downloaded later. Run your mouse pointer around the track and it will tell you the time and date, position, speed and altitude (I have used it in a plane) at that point at 1 min intervals. It turns a hand held GPS into a chart plotter on your laptop or PDA in a nice dry tug wheelhouse. Cracking bit of kit.
The track can be emailed, and I think you may be able to extract it as a .csv file.
