preserving lifespan of gauges ?

Hi Everyone. Is it possible to preserve the life of console guages ? My mercury trim and Tacho guage are now in their 4th year. When I take cover off rib they are steamed up inside with condensation although they do soon clear. However I'm sure its only a matter of time before they either stop functioning or become erratic. Can you whack wd40 up inside them ?

Ventilate the cover - if it's doing that to your gauges it's doing that to everything else in there!

I was under the impression that most guages are sealed at the factory(sealed to be waterproof, anyway - not talking about tampering); if that's the case, any condensation will be fresh water, and should be fairly benign (certainly more benign than opening the case to salt air to get rid of the fresh water.)

Perhaps a Merc mechanic or marine electrician could tell you whether it's possible to open and purge the guages (filling with dry nitrogen would be ideal), but I suspect that just living with it or replacing the guages are your options at this point.
