Especially with boats that have little draft, bit of wind & it's away. Main reason I usually have a drogue out when fishing on the drift.

The non commercial unit I'm designing/building is simply a secondary safety device. Though the time to build and install is 15 hours or more, the cost is low. As I said, I'm not always connected to the short tether when trolling and don't want to hang my self in extending it's length. Since it's only a 15 foot SIB. Thought I had already wrote it's for use on lakes in Canada. Not the Atlantic.

Drift rate due to wind is the same regardless of body of water.
The prop spinning causes as much damage regardless of body of water.
Why are you not connected to the kill cord? after all its only a 15ft sib?

Hey, chill out! Maybe he likes to smoke a cigar on the afterdeck when he's finished dinner?

wast meant as disrespect to the size of the craft, was using his reasoning for not using a killcord all the time.

If you are only interested in the views of people who agree with you then ribnet the Internet is not the place for you. You opened a discussion thread, that is an invitation to discuss, not to congratulate you for a project you have yet to build.

I'm certainly not here for a pat on the back, I share ideas that others may have an interest. Further POLY, I have tried to help others with various bot/motor/electrical troubles. Lastly, I won't be intimidated, this includes your post above. If you have something to say like the above do it privately - admin team or no - Your one of the worst offenders here is degrading other peoples posts, maybe you should exit.

Your were already told POLY, perhaps had I looked at your title first it would have been privately.

I like the idea as a secondary safety item. Trying to troll-fish while tethered using a downrigger's a pain and so often I have to unplug myself from the engine tether. Would like a longer range though.

if the boats only 3m (from your details) how much can't you reach with the kill cord on?

You shouldn't move around the boat with the engine on and in gear without the kill cord in position that's the whole point of it, to kill the engine when you are out of reach of the controls.

If your engine is so poor that you can't rely on it to re start, you really need to get it looked at, if it's all tickety boo and starts all the time, why not pull the kill cord off do what you need to, then re attach it.

On a 3m SIB?
Just get a longer kill cord?

Actually - if you hang on a minute someone will come along who has just invented one.

I don't fish. But if I understand down riggers correctly you have a heavy pole attached to boat, with ?wire of known length down to a heavy weight then the tackle beyond the weight. Is this correct?

If so why does the red dangly get it the way? Where do you attach it. Where is the down rigger etc. I'll be the collective have a solution that doesn't mean disconnecting...

Oh and I read that down rigging has its dangers because if the wire if it snags an obstruction you can flip boat. I'd want my KC in for that. Sure a WiFi solution sounds good but still to easy to have left it in the dry bag or the cag pocket that you just took off coz it was too hot...

But a longer kill cord mightn't disengage quickly enough, you could be in the water heading towards the prop and the engine still running....

@nightfisher, Probably already thought of but maybe link the electronic kill switch to activate automatically when it's submerged, same as the life vests, in case you took a knock on the way out ...

Am not a fisherman, so the idea of standing in the bow of a 3m SIB
with an OB - (locked off in the straight ahead position I would hope)
- and running at trolling speed, doesnt appeal to me.
Bass boats I have seen with spring foot throttle controls at the bow
- press for power - release - no power, but in an inflatable, at 3m long,
I would be keeping the kill cord length so it was taught
while fishing in the bow
and probably route it through something as simple as a stainless
steel ring fastened to the bench seat, or attached to the side of the tube.
That way if I came out backwards from the bow
the slack in the cord would be taken out by the ring and the OB killed.
Personally - I would ALWAYS want to have control
of the tiller in an under way SIB, even one going that slowly.
