Ta! I even have some old sub 512mb cards lying around.

So, in theory if the card holders aren't fubar I can sort it. Cheers!

I may have misinterpreted your intentions here, but don't even consider trying to "read" a Navionics chart card with a standard reader/PC - their message self destructs in five seconds (or whatever).

Ah, so I can't buy a cd and put the data on my own card á lá Bluechart?

I just want some form of mapping on it so
1) I don't have a huge useless lump (or hole if I remove it) in my console.
2)I've got a backup.

I'm not fussed if it's out of date as there'll be a new removable colour one going on that's much closer to my field of vision at some point.

I think you'd have to use the original card. Navionics card readers (for such things exist) are effectively a card reading dongle. Without one, Sayonara Data!

Fair enough. I'd better check the thing out properly before I go trying to find maps then.

Well, there are some VERY cheap older cards on ebay now and then, especially cards with limited geographic coverage...

There's nothing to be gained by reading the map cards. You put the map card in the unit & forget about it. You have a second card for waypoints, routes, tracks etc, that's why there are 2 card slots.
