LED Navigation light bulbs indented base

Hi all
I want to replace my navigation light bulbs to LED,s I can find pleanty of LED,s Red and Green bulbs on line, however mine have got an indented base top and bottom which keeps them in place on the contacts and I cant find any on line, are these rare and if so, any one know where I can get some from please. I am a bit limted in outlets here as I live out on the Hebrides.

Thanks.

Hi Lee,

Have you got a picture of the existing bulb, and any details from it??
Eg. 12 volt 5 watt and any other letters identifying the lamp cap.

It sounds, from your description, like a car number plate lamp....

If you’re going down the LED route, you are better changing the whole fitting. Replacement LED bulbs will “most likely” comprise the performance of your filament fittings, due to beam pattern & light colour/luminosity (brightness). Complete LED fittings are sealed which is an added bonus, no more rotten connectors.

Pikey dave is right.....again.....!!

The bespoke led nav lights are usually vastly superior to led retrofit bulbs....try to choose the good, branded led fittings, rather than be tempted by cheap chinese imports.

If you do stick with existing navigation lights (can be expensive to change), considering some of the stainless steel 316 units from Osculati or Hella, then I've ordered from these guys before. https://boatlamps.co.uk/

How do you know there isn’t a problem? Have you checked the colour rendition, beam pattern, range, luminosity etc. As explained above, the older fittings aren’t designed around LEDs, they are designed around a good old filament bulb. They are very different beasts.

Dave I hear what your saying and Ill rephrase. I have had no problems electrically, they work but as you said effectiveness may be compromised.the only disadvantage with sealed led is when they go they are gone.

I have fitted all my boats with LED bulbs into the aquasignal 25 with no issues. The festoon replacement ones. They beam out 180 degrees so whats the problem putting them into lights that are 90 +22.5? Cant use these into all round white obviously.

Red and Green bulbs are suggested on line , as pure LED white light through coloured lenses give the wrong colour output.

Thank you for your suggestions gents,

Bearing in mind my experience is car based, red LEDs through a red lens were rubbish.
Mrs p was following me in her car & when we got to our destination asked me if I knew my tail lights weren't working.

I just checked with perko usa about replacement bulbs for Nav Lights. The response is interesting and goes along with what Pikey Dave was saying ,they recommend the old fashioned incandescent lamp.

In my case, I do very little night boating, and when I saw the price of LED nav light fittings I nearly fainted. You can change many old style filament bulbs for price of LED.

If I did lots of passages at night, then I can see the benefit maybe, but when I use them for only a few hours per year, I don't think it's worth it for me.

I've previously asked Hella about this and they responded, with evidence, that their lights exceed the international maritime Electro Magnetic Interference standard.

PS - I don't work for Hella
