Ignition barrel

Not sure if this is in the right section.........

Need a new ignition barrel/key+assembly for a Yamaha 702 remote. Anyone any ideas where I can get one from?

Also is it a wiring nightmare to switch to aftermarket top mounted controls with separate switch for trim/tilt, kill cord and ignition?

Your local friendly Yamaha dealer would be able to help but I guess you might be seeking a lower cost alternative.

No - it will be quite straight forward, all colour coded and the colours are listed somewhere on ribnet.

Doing a search on the 'tinternet I can only find the ignition unit as part of the loom. Not taken it to bits yet but I would have thought this could be bought as a separate component?

Sorry Polwart, must have posted at the same time.
Liverpool power boats it is then. I've heard they are good with Yamaha's.
And thanks for the info on wiring, will do a search.

I would think so too. I would see if your local yam dealer can order it for you. My parts list for the 703 implies it is available separately (so would assume so for 702 too).

EDIT: Sorry just read the bit at the front of the manual which explains that anything starting with a . is available only as part of an assembly - so it would appear that for the 703 you may need to buy the whole lot?

Thanks Polwart.

Bugger that's turning into allot of money just for a pissy arse little thing.
I wonder if I can make something from an old landy or mini ignition. Not sure if all Yam's are the same but on this one the ignition barrels only function is to start. On my 50 mercury it had a choke system built into it.
Another pain in the head.

Thanks again for looking into that for me.

On the 703 it works the choke too (push key in). If you don't have choke I would think you could wire in any key switch - and aftermarket kill switches are available. Worst case you could just replace it with some switches - since Yam keys aren't exactly a security device - more of an inconvenience when you forget them!

Really? Chokes broke then
There's a new 702 on Ebay, any idea is the wiring is much different mate?
I expect I'm gonna go for a top mounted and nobs and whistles everywhere though.
And as for yams key's there's only half of one and it still turns it over.

Might still be worth talking to your dealer, this US site has the parts for the 703 separately...

http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/ya...510-10-00.html

Not sure what the difference is between a 702 and 703... if its just electrical wouldn't seem that difficult to fix... the 703 is not exactly sophisticated electrically.

Just been fitting the ignition that I bought off Mr H. The 703 on this one has a switch for the choke instead of having it on the key. The one from Matt has it on the key. Now this isn't rocket science but I'm just making sure for piece of mind, I can just bypass the switch (blue wire) to make the choke run off the switch can't I?

Personally I'd leave it on the switch if possible-but that's due to the control position on a standard 5.4 console which makes it quite easy to push the key in with a knee when it's bumpy which stops the engine rapidly. Is it likely to happen to you?

It shouldn't be a hard job to move it over to the ignition though.

It's very easy to move it to the ignition but the sealed ignition wiring would be a little more tricky to re wire to the switch. That's a good point about knocking it with your knee.
I've left it all in bits for today as it's throwing it down outside. Prob forget where everything goes though Will have a ponder on it, cheers Nos

Edit: I could just keep the blue out of the ignition unplugged and run a wire (use the old one) from the switch to the blue in the loom.
