Icom

I have been looking at two Icom handhelds, the ic-m21, and the ic-m31. Apart from price and key layout, I cant seem to see any difference. Same weight same size, same functions?
I would be glad to hear any thoughts on this subject.
Thanks, Nick.

Icom!!!

Well not sure if I am up to answering your questions but will do me very best.

The main diffs are

Smaller screen on M31
No rotory On/Off on M31
Button lay out better on M31 (IMHO)

oh yeah and price M31 has a lower price

Big thing, only radios in there class that stay waterproof when AA case is fitted.
Important in an open boat

3 year warranty.
If they let in water in the first 3 years and you have not neglected it we will replace or repair it FOC (dependent on water damage).

Some on here will vouch for that

IMHO the M31 actually feels nicer in the hand, but thats a personal thing I guess.

Hope that all helps

Best regards

good question one I do not have the answer to.
but the guys in service can tell if its abuse or the unit at fault.

Each return would be assessed case by case.

So can't give you hard and fast what does and what don't
Sorry if vauge

Thanks Jon, I was hoping you might have an answer for me.
By the way, The american website wasnt much use, and the UK one was a bugger to find, I kept getting directed to the "International Council of Museums". They have a lot of links.
Thanks, Nick.

Hi all, I can certainly vouce for what jon says. My M21 flooded after 15 month. No problems ICOM replaced it. It took some time as they were out of stock (popular radio) 3** (Gold) for ICOM.

Nik i can also vouch for ICOMs customer service side, my hand held flooded after 5 months and it was the first time i'd really used it in anger ( or maybe i should say Phil Davies used it in anger) anyway the complete set was replaced to my complete satisfaction....do a search as there has been a lot of talk here about ICOM over the past months worth reading.

Hello Jon, one other query. These radios use ni-cads, is it possible to replace them with Li-ion?
Nick.

PS. Any special deals at ribex?

Ni-cad v Li-Ion

Nik

The only way to do this on the M21 or M31 is to get hold of Li-ion
AA cells and put them in the battery case.

The battery backs are only Ni-cad.

If you want Li-ion ans standard you would have to go for the M1EuroV or M87.

I am working on the Ribex stuff at the moment am not sure what we will do but am sure we will do something special even if it only for the Ribnet boys and girls

Jon thats very generous of you to offer huge discounts, 10 year warranties and px to members of ribnet. I hope steel developements can also offer something similar.

Perhaps one thing you could do is to offer a free check of radio ariels for gain / performance etc to members who bring there boats.

Pete

MMMMMMMMM!!!!!!

Pete

If I were to offer all that would soon be looking for another job!!
But watch this space for the offers!

I could offer VSWR checks, conection checks.
Not a lot more other than advice.

And only on Ribs fitted with our kit

Regards

Yes please, and can you tell the rest of them to get back in an orderly queue.

Think you and Steel Developements are going to be busy. Nice kit, we do like Icom having managed to trash most of the other makes over the years.

Err, no its not, but to be fair to Icom it did fall off the console twice before it stopped working, seem to remember you had to reassemble the bits too however it will go into Jon to see what can be done. Worrying bit is I can't remember if I registered it so the 3 years warranty bit might be sticky point.
