Glomex VHF aerial

anyone have any experience of these?

http://www.marinemegastore.com/produ...-MAR_RA111.htm

Appreciating that if i mount it on the console the range will be limited, it looks far better in my view than a taller aerial on the transom with no a frame.....

thanks
Howard

Hi, thats a helical antenna primarily disigned for the top of a mast. I would worry abount an antenna on a console, where it could interfere with other electronic gear and easily be touched. RF burns are painful and @ 25w very possible. Been there had that at ham frequencies, not a million miles away from marine frequencies.

Low mounted heliflex is OK for backup or AIS but you wouldn't choose for main antenna. There's also VTronix and Pacific versions at better prices!

If you need to mount on the console, use a 4-way ratchet base. Fix it to the side of the console (as high as possible) on the side you least use to go round so at least it's a bit out of the way.

With an adjustable basemount, you can also fold it down for towing/storage.

Glomex RA106 GRP antenna - approx £35 delivered.

Alternatively, is some sort of pole arrangement at the transom possible?

Hows about a mast on your transom instead of a frame? It worked on my searider.

Plenty of stainless ratchet mount things available, and someone (Possibly Glomex, no time to search at the mo) does various 1"x14 threaded extension poles. Then mount your antenna of choice up there out of harm's way and get a bit more height for better range into the bargain.

Could even mount it on your console like that to get it above head height.
