Garmin GPS12 interface

Garmin 12. Predecessor to the 72. Supposedly if you read the paperwork, it only sends NMEA on the "Data out" wire. It's ability to "read" appears to be limited to the Garmin format or RTCM for radio beaons according to my instruction book.

I have noticed, however that when I am in the "comms" menu, I have the option of NMEA/NMEA, which is not mentioned in the book of words, implying that I can feed it with an NMEA signal.

I am guessing I may have a higher level of software in the machine than my instructiion book, so the question is - Does anyone out there know what scentences it will understand? I guess it's the usual array of Nav. info (lat, long) that it squirts out to the VHF presumably to connect it to an external antenna with built in WAAS or similar, but I noticed the 72 also seems to read water depth, temp & speed sentences.......

I stick to the old adage, "if it works leave it alone!". Not very helpful, sorry.
