DSC radio with easy to change MMSI

Just wondering is it a pain to change the MMSI on any radio or are there some where it can be changed relatively easily?

Is it part of the DSC specification that it has to be a pain to change it?

Yes, the US particularly doesn't like the idea you can spoof MMSI. So they insist one time only. So the rest has to match...

On the Standard Horizon HX870 DSC which I own it is possible for the user to re-programme a new MMSI number by use of a password obtained by emailing the manufacturer.

The process is detailed here:
Reset of MMSI for DSC Radio by End User - CONTINUOUSWAVE

I don't know if there is a charge for this or if they limit the number of times per set; I would also hope they check for valid ownership details to prevent this happening if the unit is stolen.

The linked thread also goes on to discuss some other units where this is possible.

Basically it's part of the spec.

Some old sets had a key press (power plus volume plus ch16, plus Ptt while stood on yer head.) But think all modern sets you are looking at a programming lead and software that is dealer only..

Hi-new to this ,so please bear with me!
My boat came with a vhf with a mmsi number.
Can I just keep the same number and get the details of the previous owner taken off and put mine on? or is it not for that?

Yes

This is what is meant to happen. If you contact OFCOM they will contact the previous owner and if they don't reply within a relatively short period of time they will re-allocate the number to you.
The number belongs to the boat not the previous owner.
