Apple iPad

How cool is this, a tablet PC running all your iPod Touch and iPhone Apps!

Cheaper than a tank of fuel in Poole too!

Expect to see:-

Waterproof housing with 12v charger,
WiFi relay for AIS and RADAR,

etc etc

They say Apple doesnt really invent too many things, but it takes existing ideas and just makes them better, and I think thats a fair comment, but I think the tablet is a risky one, sure it will work great and look great, but is there the need for it ? are they hoping to replace the laptop ? Macbbook airs are already supremely light and thin .. I'm on the fence on this one

They are creating a new market. It does not matter if you already have an iPhone or a laptop, you will want an iPad.

When Apple came up with the accelerometer for the iPhone they thought it was a clever way of turning off the touch screen when you held it to your ear, seriously that is where it came from. The accelerometer in the hands of developers became an interface that people now cannot imagine using devices without.

In the hands of developers the iPad is going to take on a life all of it's own.

Neither you, nor I, nor Apple can envisage the Apps that people are going to come up with.

There are needs that no one knows they have yet.

Are you sure about the accelarometer being originally designed for turing off the screen when you put it to your ear? I'm pretty sure that its the little red proximity sensor that when covered shuts off the screen?! In the middle of the call if you take hold the phone out in front of you and cover with your thumb the general area to the left of the speaker the screen will shut off.

I'm sure the acclearometer was not originally conceived for apps because there wasn't even an app store on original ipods (&maybe iphones)

Not so sure .. tablets and tablet PC's have been around for a while .. the implementation might be new though .. which is the point I was making, but also, there are only so many bits of kit people can afford / carry, so its going to have to replace something I think .. and if it isnt up to the job, such as lack of memory or its too expensive comparitive to a cheap lappy,.. its going to be difficult to make it stand up. Applephiles will buy it ofcourse just to keep up with their mates ....

The accelerometer was there to enable the phone to automagically flip from portrait to landscape. As gotchiguy says, the proximity sensor is entirely different (and as far as I'm aware no one's found any more uses for it!)

I don't really get the iPad in its current form. Then again the 2G iPhone (pre app store) wasn't all that special either. Maybe the iPad V2 will be where it starts making sense.

I'm sure there will be a market for the Ipad - from the apple fans.

But I struggle to see how it would fill a void in my life.

I have a smartphone (which is also my mp3, video player, mobile web browser, ebook reader and unlimited data 3G modem for my netbook) an N97 BTW as I wanted something different to an i(only do one thing at once)phone.

A netbook if I want to do more heavy browsing, edit a photo or a short video, upload gps waypoints.

A full laptop for longer video editing and more intensive tasks.

An ipad is too big to replace a smartphone and can't run any software not authorised by apple, so dispite having 5,000 fart generators and games and a limited number of useful apps your unlikely to find a massive amount of the more obscure but useful apps. ALso the lack of a camera (even a built in web cam would be useful for skype calls) and the lack of Flash protocol in the browser are not good signs.

If used in addition to a smart phone, to get any real use out of it would have to be the more expensive 3G enabled (plus an additional monthly / pay as you go network bill).

On the 3G point am I being cynical when I think that Apple, dispite selling them unlocked, have designed it to use a micro sim card so you can't just put your phone sim in it? or is there another benefit other than reducing bulk.

However having said all that if I had to replace the netbook I would probably be holding out for one of these:

The Lenovo U1 looks like everything the iPad should have been, buy isn't. I've held off buying a netbook so far as I just can't justify one. I'd buy a U1 like a shot though.

A bit more than an iPad by the look of things, but much less than one of your car stereos!
