Yamaha Malta

I have just acquired a Yamaha MALTA outboard but not sure what hp it is .
The numbers on the plate are 6L5 S 044434
I think the guy said it was maybe a 4hp
I have tried to google it but can`t find a conclusion.
Any ideas . Thanks,

It’s strange, I was looking at them a month or so back and it seemed to vary in each advert between 4HP, 3.5HP 3HP

I think the general consensus was they are 3HP and well thought of!

I have one as my aux and it’s a great engine, get all the service items from bhg marine.
Never used it in a real Emergancy but do run it when fishing etc.

One time I did use it was in Portland marina when we left the berth at the bottom of a spring and the boat was barely floating, which prevented the main engine running.

Have you ever had a Malta spin it’s liner? I’ve seen three or four now over the years that have got hot and somehow the cylinder liner has rotated in the block, partially obstructing the intake and exhaust ports causing boggy running and lack of power. The recoil start is the telltale as the liner also blocks the decompression hole so they are harder to pull over.

Out of interest I did machine an arbor and pressed a spun liner all out of the block and refitted it back in place with loctite bearing fit on an almost new Malta when they were still being sold, which then went on for many years with no issues.

Yip, as soon as I get them in with a scrap water pump I have a look at the ports. I have scrapped about 20+/- over the years because of turned liner.

I'm sure this would be easily fixed if the liner is pressed out and refitted using a grub screw or roll pin as positive locking.

As above I fixed an almost new one many years ago but it isn’t worth the time fixing one nowadays, although they are far superior than Yamaha’s four stroke equivalent.
