Yamaha control box, circlips?

I've just replaced my throttle and gear cables. The new ones seem to be springier than there predecessors. The plastic end bits don't seem to stay on the stud/rod inside the box end as well as the old ones did. It might just be that I haven't got the tension right, but I notice there is a groove on them which looks like it's meant for a circlip, should there be one? I've never had one...

My 703 box has got clips. I only know because when I rigged it I spent about half an hour looking for one that pinged off!

All yamaha boxes have two circlips to hold the cable ends on.

The don't provide a spare with the 703 but with the 704 they always sellotape a spare circlip inside the box.
