Yamaha 60hp cracked gearbox

Hi, a friend / member recommend that I join this forum as said theres lot of really useful help available and im in need!!

My problem is that I have found a large crack on the gearbox housing of my new to me boat. I know its bad and looking for a replacement but can anyone advise other size engines that have the same gearbox? its a 1995 (I think) / Yamaha 60hp long shaft 2 stroke. trying to find replacement but not having much luck!

Thanks in advance for any help!

unfortunately this is a common issue with older 2 stroke yamahas they can be stripped down and welded .my neighbor at the boat compound has an old 80,s yamaha 85 and he has had to have that welded twice same place as yours has gone .

Have you got a full pic of the engine and year etc and or model number.

Also do you know what has caused that crack, does the gearbox turn ok.

I am wondering if it could be stripped down cleaned up and ali welded...... Just a thought.

Just saw Beerbellys post saying the same thing

Uploaded on @c.low's behalf - he's having some IT issues... There is a weld repair on the other side.

Welcome to the forum.

Firstly, I am sorry you have found yourself with this problem. As a fellow Yamaha 2 stroke owner I have a potential vested interest in how this turns out.

Could you not strip the gearbox down and get it welded up? It would need a specialist to get the gap closed up, but I'm sure it could be done.

Is there any water in the gearbox oil?

I had this on a Mercury 150hp years ago, whilst the crack went along way back, it didn't go as far as the actual gearbox as there was a void for the first 6 inches or so. I drilled a small hole at the start of the crack to stop it going any further and that worked out well. I carried on using it and sold it like that. I didn't try to cover it up, it was there to be seen and monitored.

Good luck with finding a solution.

thanks for all your responses so far. im not very mechanical and hoping to fix asap as the season is fast approaching! I was thinking / hoping that I will buy a used gearbox swop them over then potentially repair the original unit over the winter. Am I right in thinking the gearbox is generic to other engine sizes (ie same gearbox for 50 - 60 - 70hp)???

ive drained the oil, its murky, not very smelly, will try upload a photo when I figure out how to convert JPEG!

It would be great if I could get another season out of it, spent to much already!

I think they are indeed the same bottom half on the 50/60/75 and possibly even 90 hp engines.

I assume you have done a trawl of ebay and Gumtree

50 & 60 yes, but 75 - 90 is different I'm afraid.

Wow, you guys really are so helpful!!!! Thank you!!!!

mine is a 1995, brought from a boat dealer who failed to mention the crack and welds. ive found a few options on eBay but they are from differnt size engines and I wasnt sure what would fit. Im also in the north of Scotland so need the item to be delivered or that whole engine smallribber would of been great.

bit more of an update, ive removed the prop and can see that at the moment the crack docent go as far as the gearbox, my plan is to drill a hole at the start then monitor over the season. I cant afford or have anyway to weld it yet but could I use a metal epoxy to slow the crack and strengthen or is it better to leave exposed to monitor??

yes the gearbox turns fine, no obvious issues with running that I can tell.

If you dont put a huge value in the gearbox part of the engine I thik it might be possible to fill the crack with some metal type epoxy. The issue here as I am sure you know will possibly make it harder to do a proper welded repair later as it will need you to get all the epoxy out.

If I were you and if perhaps funds are short and of course time (as always) is short I think I would give the epoxy type filler a try to see how it holds

Looking at your pics I am also wondering if it might be possible to get a thin large stainless steel Jubilee clip around the rear end to hold it together. You could also possibly file the strap at the top to fit it in if you can only get a wide one.
