Yamaha 4hp steering damper missing from housing

I've an old reliable 4hp 6eo Yam. The steering was very stiff and the damper screw engaged to nothing. I stripped the steering transom case down to find there was no tension band for the screw to engage in and it was a bit clogged up in there. The rubbers seem fine.

I've a newer donor 4hp engine which has a recess cast into for the band to sit in to prevent it from dropping down the fluted leg inside i guess, where as the older model does not.

My question is, should I swap the cases over as they are an exact match or can just put the band band on the old one and expect it to stay up there without the seat channel for another 20 years? Well as long as...
They are different colours and the newer transom bracket is far more corroded.Click image for larger version
