Yamaha 150 4 stroke temperature gauge

I have a new 150 which I just purchased late last fall. I haven't put many hours on it yet, but it seems that the temperature reading on the gauge has always been dead centre once the engine is warmed up.

This weekend a couple of times I noticed the temp gauge running up closer to the 3/4 mark when I was running hard. The lake is still pretty cold... about 60F at the surface, but this is probably the warmest I have run so far.

Once I slow down, and run at more average speeds, the gauge returns to the centre area. I have checked the intakes and they are clear. The tell tale seems fine.

I'm wondering if this higher reading is normal or is it possible I have a problem... possibly the impeller needs to be replaced already???

Any thoughts? I'm getting into peak season and don't want any problems out there~~

Thanks!

I have this engine too.

I understand there is a Service Bulletin on some engines for the water pressure and speed sensors, mine is a new (January 09) engine and is awaiting these parts to be replaced. Could be entirely unconnected to water temperature of course.

I assume your oil level is correct?

Thanks Neilda... I'll look into that. The oil level on the gauge was dead centre. I will check the stick as well...

Thanks!
