V4 Yamaha 140hp

I'm considering going to look at a rib currently running the v4 Yamaha auto lube. It's advertised as a 2006 engine, were they available as late as that? It seems this one has been 'converted ' to premix at some stage. Was this common practice? Anyone shed some light on why this would be done?
Would this engine be considerably more thirsty than an equivalent sized optimax for example?
Thanks

They are a good engine massive amount of torque but they are heavy on fuel if worked hard
The premix system on yams is usually good but nothings foolproof and some people prefer to premix. You don't usualy know the premix isn't working until the engine goes bang not as popular as the 80/85/90 3cylinder yam engines so probably needs to be reasonably cheap

Thanks, it's attached to a ribcraft 585 which is why the package caught my eye.

Yamaha stopped making the 140 two stroke in 1989. If its a 130 it can be a 2007 engine.

That’s the engine number, I’m struggling to decipher it tbh. The guy selling says it’s 2004 but commissioned in 2006.

Also reckons it’s always been pre-mix and not an auto-lube engine.

It’s a 600+ mile round trip to view so am keen to know as much as I can about it before I decide to travel.

Just had a look at this. This engine is a one year only 140B that was only available in the middle east. It came from Kuwait and it is indeed a 2004 engine.

Thanks again, appreciate your help. Could it have always been pre-mix ?

Yes, it has always been premix. There will be a blanking plate over where the oil pump would be but there is no drive gear on the crankshaft as far as I can make out. (Not so easy on my phone) The carb main jets appear to be #180 so same as uk engine.

Hi. We have a 115 yam V4 on our tornado RIB and it's really the perfect rig. It's a 1996 engine and apart from having had a new switch box its only had routine servicing doing and it's been 100 reliable.

Great engine with bags of. Torque, it's maybe a little thirsty. Very say to service. Cheers dj

My dive club has the v4 115 and is a bril engine. Ours is a 1996 engine and apart from a switch box has had no other problems. It's got tons of torque and maybe it is a little thirsty but that seems to be dependant on how heavy handed you are and keeping the revs down makes a huge difference. Given the usual checks in my view it's a super unit.

Dave

Thanks Dave, I’m undecided yet tbh. Just discovered the hull is on an unbraked trailer which will be an issue. May consider a cheeky offer as it has been for sale for a while now.
I do love an old school two strokes coming from a motorbike background.

Great engine but will use literally twice the fuel of a 125 optimax !
