SOLAS certified engines (Inboard and Outboard)

Hi all of you,

Thanks for all the information

but I am confused whether mercury/mariner and yanmar diesel engines are SOLAS certified or not, there is nothing mention about the SOLAS in their exclusive websites
so
how would I know that mercury/mariner and yanmar diesel engines are SOLAS certified?

please tell me if anybody have any clue about their SOLAS certification

I can e mail you a certificate for the engines if you need it. Also on the engine will have a little wheel symbol on the engine serial number plate.

It's not the kind of thing they make a big deal out of as you're average punter doesn't even know about SOLAS requirements (let alone care about them). You would have to ask the dealer/manufacturer specifically about SOLAS certification of engines.

Note also that in the above links that have been posted by members, the engines have been "modified" to be SOLAS compliant by mounting/fitting extra kit to the engines. The manufacturers don't tend to build these engines with SOLAS compliance in mind as it's an extra cost that 99% of their potential target market don't give a monkeys about. This is why you will struggle to find literature/sales information about SOLAS compliance of engines on manufacturer's websites.

There is one question in my mind about this engines

Why the prices of SOLAS certified engines of Volvo Penta company are so high as compared to other SOLAS engines of different companies?

Please reply me if anybody knows about this thing

I seem to remember that to be SOLAS certified, the engine has to be able to be hand started without a battery?

Some years ago I was involved in SOLAS approval of some of the Mercury engines, ie 2 stroke including Optimax. The first approvals took place at Verviers when the engines were still assembled there and later in Poland. These engines were never modified nor had any extra kit etc. To obtain SOLAS for a particular engine the engine has to pass a number of tests as specified by the IMO Rules and Regulations There were a number of tests which had to be done. Like hand starting, removing the cowl and showering the running engine with water, placing the engine in a cold storage for a specified time after which the engine had to start, running the engine dry for a specified time and if the impeller did not survive the engine failed. A rather stupid requirement and I believe still applies today.
I am not up todate on the 4 stroke requirement but guess the type of tests will still be the same.

the important thing is that these were standard production outboard engines without any modifications.

Think youll find thats a rescue boat or fast rescue not a lifeboat
