Service intervals

Hi

Looking at buying my first RIB and just doing some sums for running costs.

I looked on a small independent who offers outboard servicing.

He has a page with suggested service intervals, not engine specific, just general info.

They seem very excessive to me and way more than what seems to be in specific manufacturer's manuals.

e.g. He recommends replacing the gear oil and the spark plugs every 3mths or 50 hours.

This is excessive? It seems way over the top to me.

I would of thought that with an engine that does around 100hrs a season, it would be enough to change all the oils and plugs at the beginning of a season.

Can an engine really need new oil very 50 hrs?

I thought the recommended gear oil service interval was once a year or 100 hours.
In reality 100 hours is a lot of use for most people I would suspect the 50 hours is quoted to catch any water ingress before it does any damage but you could easily check for water ingress by loosening the lower plug and checking the colour of the oil then just screw it back in rather than draining it.
It's often the same oil that goes in the diff of a car and how often do you change diff oil?
You will soon be doing a lot of your own basic maintenance anyway as it's much more convenient and helps you to get to know your equipment

Most are 100 hours or yearly for both oils not knocking 50 hours but unessasary IMO my vehicle gearbox is sealed for life as a comparison

I believe that a large part of servicing an engine is loosing all of the nuts and bolts to prevent problems in the future
