RNLI Mariner 15hp questions...

Hi Chaps,

Not been on for a while due to other issues but finally getting back into boats.

I'm possibly picking up a Y Class at long last in a week or so - comes with the standard 15 hp Mariner. Stupid question but looking at the pic I presume this is a 2003 model and the serial number does not contain the date like other engines?

Can anyone pass on more info on these engines please?

Who makes them (is it a Yam underneath?)?

Service tips or issues to be expected?

And current market value for the engine alone?

Currently using the good old Tohatsu 9.8 so guessing the Mariner is very similar under the skin.

Thanks all.

Nope, Mercury built engines.

Unless its been serviced recently, get a new impeller put in, fresh gear lube, new plugs, clean fuel filter and carb and give it a general grease up.

Sought after engines, later engines normally advertised for £1000-£1500

Completely different engines, the Mariner is a much stronger engine.

If your after one, I have a fuel bladder that came out my Y-Class on ebay at the moment, bidding at £10.50.

good stuff .. I was close to buying it ( at less than ebay price - so hopefully ou have the same or less )..but the distance / lack of trailer etc made it just not practical for me

Oh well, looks like the search goes on, no deal...

Sam, is there a specific RNLI version of these that is worth the valuation given and more desirable as checking past sold ones and the odd one on eBay they've gone for much less?

PS - if you hear of any more Y's for sale let me know!

Shame, but I reckon you'll find a tidier one if you keep looking

With regards to the engines, last year my friend sold a '06 15hp engine for £1700!!, was mint though. I haven't seen many post 2000 engines go for less than £750.

Cheers Sam, you're right about the boat but it kind of came free with the engine at that price. Typical it was unsold for months and then just when I've nearly agreed a deal someone finally bids it on eBay.

Do you have any nice big pics of your Y you can share or maybe pop on that old "Y Class show and tell" topic? What number was yours by the way?
