Prop for new engine

When I can get hold of it from where it's stuck during lockdown I'll be fitting a new(to me) engine to The Nashers Revenge, and would like to look out for props on EBAY etc whilst I'm waiting.

Can anyone suggest a starting point to try.

The hull is a 6.5M Ocean, a little known heavyish commercial hull.
I don't know it's weight or waterline length, and can't measure them at the moment. the planning pad is slightly rounded and it's quite a deep V Hull

It's currently fitted with a Suzuki 200EFI XL which has been great for many years.
After some initial mucking about I settled on a 3 blade Stainless Steel Suzuki prop. 14.25"Dia x 21" Pitch.
I normally cruise @28-30knots with 2 to 4 passengers and that prop/engine has been a good combination.
I once with a light load and just me on board saw 52knts on the GPS at WOT @5600RPM, but never repeated it. WOT normally gave @45-48knts with a couple of passengers on board.

I'll be fitting a 225 XL Optimax - see image.

The increase in HP is because I just couldn't find a 200HP engine, so took a 25Kg weight penalty instead. Oh and i couldn't bring myself to fit a lower HP engine.

My current thinking is that the prop will be in the same place, spinning at @ the same revs, and I'll be using the same amount of power as the old engine most of the time, so I should start with a prop of the same size as before.

What do the gurus and oracles think?

Makes sense, get a used one of ebay that is decent.

I have the following, 1 x Stainless Steel Mercury Marine Laser 2 Prop, 3 blade, diameter I think is 14 1/4 x 21 pitch code on prop 48-16546, used slight rough edge on blades (very slight), yamaha fitting centre bit included if fitting on yamaha or if mercury just remove or get mercury centre part ? £100.00 (pick up from Ringwood Area)

BTB Hi, and thanks for the comment.

The part number for the prop you have is shown as a 13 7/8" X 21P when I goggle it, so a bit smaller (3/8") in diameter.

Who doesn't like shiny prop buying ! Think the Mercury mirage plus is similar diameter to your old prop

I have had good results with laser 2 props on various V6 Mercury engine's

Keith's garage is probably like a prop shop !

My choice would be start with a laser 2 23pitch or mirage plus 21pitch

I’ve a laser 2 21p on mine. 225hp optimax on a Solent rib 6.9 metre. I top out at approx 55 mph fuel is about 1 litre a mile not checked it sensibly. Hole shot is good and it’s in the right rev range for WOT. Hope that helps

I have a brand new ,,, never used, 22" Laser II with hub kit etc if you are interested . Still in the Mercury Marine box

I've an almost new 16" pitch vengeance prop for sale if you somehow find your calcs and assumptions were miles out! (I doubt that will be the case)

I ran a Laser 2 21" on the same motor on the Ballistic 7.8 . I reckon you probably want a 23" pitch as you'll be a bit lighter.

Think I've got a 19" and 21" kicking about somewhere, not pristine though. I think they've got the right hubs in.

Nos, you make a good point.

Jeff, that 22" sounds interesting, but I'd imagine the cost might be a little high on the 'Hard to justify with Lady Nasher' scale.
Can anyone confirm Nos's thoughts on the gear case size?

Phantom, I'd imagine if the 22 doesn't fit the 23 won't, but I'll do some research.

22pitch laser 2 is for 75hp - 125hp

17,19,21,23&25 pitch in the laser 2 range is for your opti

Could you PM me what you'd want for them please.

I'm in the habit of carrying a spare(plus nut, washer and pin), but it doesn't have to be the ideal size, just to get me home.
So will be looking for two props.

As above general rule for merc props even number small hub, odd numbers are v6 hub, but there are a few exception, 15p vengeance for small hub for example.

I've got a selection of 19" and 21" Mercury stainless props in the garage from when I re-engined.
Tried loads - but found that the 19" laser II that we had been using all along was what we needed.
The 4 blade ones I have gave some stern lift but no other gain - and they were heavy making a very noisy clunk when shifting gear.
For your set up I'd start with a 21" and go from there.

Yes,,, for the heavy 4 blade ones eg Rev 4 or even the new larger dia Enertia Eco you really need the Flo torq IV hub kits
