Painting Outboard

Hello All

Has anyone successfully painted their outboard?

I was going to try and repaint my lower unit with the official Yamaha outboard paint. Any pictures of other paint jobs would be great to see.

if you take it back to any bare aluminium you will have to use an acid etch primer on any bare aluminium before using a normal primer just a light wash coat of the etch is fine .upol acid 8 is a decent 1 pack etch that is available in aerosols

Not recommended on aluminium. There is a special self etching primer for that.

Zinc chromate is best etch primer money can buy for Ali ?

We give a 5 year warranty on all our applications , bare ali yellow etch 2 coats primer 3 x top coat. Going no place trust me

PVB/zinc chromate coating specfically for aluminium. Can be used on other ferrous metals and non-ferrous metals, galvanising, etc.

From an electrochemistry perspective the zinc is more electropositive than the aluminium, therefore the aluminium will corrode preferentially over time. o)

Patience.
(I SMART repair cars & caravans professionally & sometimes things take a bit longer, but the quality of the prep work will be reflected in the finished job)

Would have to disagree sir,

Aluminium

For aluminium and its alloys, although the clean surfaces are easily coated and adhesion is excellent, performance can be upgraded using a proprietary zinc chromate conversion coating.

read somewhere that someone used a propane torch to warm the metal and get a glossy appearance. Have you tried this?

On plastic bumpers and similar products

Using a hot air gun. You can get it to go glossy again if mated off
