Pacific trim ram

Hi all

Is there anyone out there who has or can tell me where i can get hold of a trim ram for a Sternpower 101 outdrive, new or secondhand, a little bit desperate, as i need my rib back in the water for the bank holiday.

Many thank in advance.

Ian

Hi Des

It is perferated just under where the hose runs across the top of the ram, i think it has been touching and that is why it has eaten through.

I was hopeing i could get away without contacting Lancing marine

many thanks
Ian

All depending on how bad the internals are but these rams shouldn’t be too bad to repair. The outer alloy sleeve is only there to get oil to the far end of the ram and does not have a piston running on the inside surface so this surface does not need to be smooth (within reason). This means that by welding it up you can get the ram working again. Round bar through the bottom hole, an adjustable on the top square block and the ram comes apart Des

Hi Des

Tryed to dril mine out, broke a couple of colbolt drills and still wouldn't shift, so ended up wacking the sh**e out of the big pin and it came out.

removed the ram and stripped it, the casing has now been cleaned up and i am going to get it welded or plated tomorrow.

Once again many thank for the directions

Ian

Paul. There is a ball bearing on a spring inside the ram that acts as a pressure relief valve if the leg hits something.
I had the problem of being able to move my leg with no air in the system and traced it to one of these balls being corroded and not seating properly.
If this is the case you will need to pipe the rams up one at a time to the pump to determine which one is faulty.

The valve is a spring sitting on a ball bearing sitting on a drilling at the bottom end of the ram. The drilling to ball bearing faces is where the problems occur. Internally on the bottom end of the ram there is a big nut, undo this and you will find the ball bearing and springs. I found that if I hit the ball bearing with a punch while it was sitting on the drilling it made it seat properly, having said that it took me a couple of goes to get it right
The other thing to watch out for is that some of the rams were made badly, the inner sleeve was not long enough, to check for this, once you have checked the valve, pressurise one side of the ram with air and make sure nothing is coming out the other side Des

When I removed the ram from the boat I removed the outer pins and unscrewed the ram from the outer housing leaving the outer housing attached to the boat, not sure if this is the best idea but my boat has had a new transom and the access ports to the inner pins has been glassed over.
As Des said the ball bearing is under a big nut at the end of the ram, the ball bearing in my ram was beyond saving although the seat in the ram was ok.
I eventually managed to get a new ball of the correct size from a friend who spent some time splitting used bearings in his factory looking for one!!
I then lapped this in using fine cutting compound.
I also changed some dodgy looking O rings while I had the ram in pieces.
I took photos of the ram during disassembly with my mobile Just incase I was left with spares after reassembly!!!
Hope this helps.

Can you get to the prop shaft grease nipples or the intermediate bearing housing?

Des, I can get to all the internals of the leg, but the gap between the leg and the bulkheads either side is next to nothing I can just about get the tip of my finger in the gap to feel that there is a pin fitted.
I was told there should be a cut out or hole there to allow removal of these pins.
On the subject of grease nipples, Is there one on the uj under the bellows?

Oh right, I can get he inner pins out without using the holes (bloody strain, but possible) using a ½” ratchet and screwdriver to leaver the pin out once it is byond the thread.

There a two grease nipple below the bellows and do need keeping an eye on Des.
