>>>60 quids worth of fuel will be a lot less than the service costs. No brainer.

Much depends on your attitude to such days out. Inc a brief stop each way or traffic it's about 10hrs on the road and that assumes they do it while you wait. Go to collect at 4pm to have them say there was a misunderstanding and it will be ready next day then that's a Travelodge and one more day off work to add in.

It's probably less than a £100 service offset by the £60 fuel so £40 saved.

I'm retired and I wouldn't bother to drive 10hrs to save £40. Remember too Soham where they're based is far from the fun capital of the world to wait about.

Note: First service on my Suzuki 20efi was £79. On my new Mariner 9.9 it was £45.

First service on our Mariner 20 (same motor as Tohatsu) was £190. Ouch!

Also most manufacturers acknowledge many motors are little used and are flexible with the timescale. Do it based on hours used. Ours had nearly 30 hrs on and nearly six months old. Barrus were ok with this.

Forgetting the costs for the scheduled services I'd be wanting to establish a relationship with a local dealer for any potential queries or warranty issues. A 500ml round trip for any attention it needed is a hell of a way.

That £190 was a bit hefty Chipko!

Seems mad to me!
As Jeff says, it's really to change oils. It's a brand new motor and if you run your motor for the recommended period there potentially could be a build up of swarf , almost certainly in the gearbox which you should get rid of with the 20hr service.
I'd try to put the hours on as early as I could just to have the motor ready to use for the season.

Received this email (very promptly I must say!) from Tohatsu when asking whether the warranty will still be valid if the first 20hr/3 month service is done well after the three month period due to lack of running. Cant see me getting many hours on the clock between now and June with the current coronavirus issues.

"Hi Ben, and thanks for buying a Tohatsu.
The answer is yes, we will still uphold the warranty.
We live in strange times and will be sensible about warranty criteria so don't worry,
I try and be lenient about service schedules. In fact, sometimes people buy their outboard
at the start of Winter and don't use it until the Spring, and I take this into account when
deciding if something is covered or not.
Hope this sets your mind at rest.

Best regards"

I’ve got a 200 Verado with 70 hours on it. I took the boat round to Bembridge Marine for some warranty work on the steering and a 12 month service - they checked it over and told me to bring it back at 100 hours, it doesn’t need a service and the warranty isn’t affected.
Great service!!
