Diesels are smelly, not like these new 2-strokes. The price of the opti oil is not as high as everyone makes out, but granted you don't pay for any on a 4-s. I can't really comment on oil consumption as i am only a few hours out of the extra-oil period, i think this will alse give me better fuel economy (more efficient combustion?).

As a thought won't a service on a 4-s cost more?

Steve,

If I remeber correctly we discussed the 4/2 stroke battle quite wellin your previuos Avon/Ring thread so there is no point going in to it on this one.

The bottom line is the difference in the cost of fuel will be very small and I think the choice is personal. It's like the difference between the Corrs (beautiful, desirable supremely talented, perfumed) and Lynnyrd Skynnird (hairy arsed, supremely talented , smelly and needed expensive fluids/substances to perform well) both produce excellent quality cd's but only one of em performed Freebird

For me it's a no brainer get the Opti. The Avon will take the power and like any situation in life having a bit in reserve won't hurt.

we did 300 hours plus on our Opti this year most of it flat out and loaded with people. I have just checked the accounts and we spent 170 quid on Opti juice, ( I then bought a 45 Gall drum at the end of the season which I have only started to break into)

That's me I am done

Cheers
g'day

Hi

We have the 135 optimax on our rib and it is a great engine. The only thing I would say against it is that if you were using it for long periods of time at low rpm around 4 – 6 knots in our boat the engine is not entirely happy. IMHO I think that a four stroke would better in this sort of role.

They are very frugal on oil consumption and I can’t say that we have found it a significant cost.

then again Cookee when you live 5 mins from a perfect slip onto the Thames at Windsor it is handy to be able to spend a sunny day on the River even though you cant get above a fast tickover.

Winsor Public Slipway

That's where I was today. I dropped in at the Leisure Centre & was on the water for an hour testing.. The current was 5 knots towards Windsor!!!!!
Had a great time & everything worked perfectly.

My RIB is looking Better!

Hi Rogue Wave

Re Speed of our Ribtec 585

Well cookie will be glad to know that we have taken it faster than 6 knots ! However the truth is I don't know exactly how fast it will go, I have had the gps reading 38 knots and is was still accelerating !

What do you get out of yours ?

Rgds

The Camel with a Honda 130 struggles to about 35 knots (it's a heavy boat) but burns about 50 lph

The Scorpion with a Opti 150 we have clocked 52knots on the GPS and were burning 35 lph.

Cheers
Stuart

I owned a avon 620, had a honda 130 on it. Great boat with a great engine!!! Only the engine is a bit heavy. I had an yam 150 2-stroke behind it in the beginnig and the boat was a lot faster. With the honda behind it the transom was a lot deeper in the water than with the yam! so if you want to go fast buy the opti! and I don't know if the make a 150 opti but the avon sure can carry one!! I's a boat that steers like a knive on high speeds only when the seas get rough you might be more happy with a lighter engine like a 90 hp 4-cilinder.

If you got any more questions please let me know!!

Best regards arne

The opti 150 is the same block and so the same weight as the 135. So the avon could carry it even if it couldn't handle the flat out speed without developing some nasty habbits.

its also heavier than the 115 fourstroke so there is no weight advntage for buying it.
Performance will be slightly better, fuel economy a bit worse as opti is v6 the fourstroke a flat 4.

Grease the trailer bearings and find a straighter bit of road and you might touch 80

Could the Honda 130 be any heavier? A Yamaha F200 weighs less.
