Odd tube on 40 mariner

Anyone got any idea if this tube would affect performance at all and what it was originally intended for?

Thats a weird looking pipe! Exhaust pipe maybe? Did you have a look inside it or smell it (for water/exhuast etc)

It's an exhaust pipe-the motor is ex military. What I want to know is why have it and does it affect performance?

Doubt it will affect performace. It looks like a fairly big pipe - certainly no smaller than the exhast outlet on the prop. As long as theres decent airflow through it it should be fine.

Yeah, but will having the exhaust not exiting near the prop affect holeshot?

I woulndt think so. A lot of engines dont have through-prop axhuasts anyway.

And if it didnt work the militery wouldnt have used it like that........

Might be... I'm tempted by it. VERY low hours-less than 50.

I would buy it.I know you shopped at Sea Mark Nunns before Phone to Speak to David.I had a 40 hp not ex army though very nice condition they sold it for me under brokerage 950 pounds.Ask his advice on value depending what he ays and what you can get it for buy it then sell use extra cash to buy what you really want. You seem hessitent is it because of the exaust .if this system works get it for yourself its sometimes nice to have something slightly unusual good luck

It'd sound like a tank and no backpressure isn't good for 2-strokes. I'm not sure it'll actually have any back pressure when running at speed either-or if that pipe would stay in the water.

If I buy it I'm keeping it for my own boat. I'd rather have a bigger one which is why I'm dubious about it. I get the feeling that it wouldn't be the easiest thing to sell looking odd like that.

I'm wondering what's been done to it inside the leg too.

That engine is a bit of a special one, its called a MinMag, its made by us (Barrus) and you should not be able to buy it as its pretty hush hush!!!, Its desgined for mine hunting and most of the bits are missing!!. It should have a silencer on the leg that the hoses attach to. Cant go into detail of how it works but hey. It will be very noisy without the silencer as the below water exhaust is blocked off so all the exhaust come out of thoses pipes through a silencer. And yes it does effect the performance!!. Dont buy it, i know of one being taken off someone by the MoD because it should not be for sale. Who is selling it out of interest??

That'd be why it had a Barrus hour meter on it then...and had 41 hours on it from new.

It was on ebay. Just been sold for £1001.
