I used what i had to hand to get it working, which was motorcycle chain grease . What would the collective knowledge suggest?

That doesn't sound as bad as the copper slip you were using. Obviously the best greases are the ones marketed as Marine grade. The water resistant grease you use to lube the wheel bearings of a trailer would also be suitable for such an application.
