The lips should always face the medium you are trying to keep in (or out) so both lips should face away from each other next time.

Just an update incase anyone does a future search.
On the same parts diagram I have, it shows the drive shaft seals in the same position. Both with their lips facing away from the gearbox.
Today I removed the drive shaft and removed these seals but this time observing which way round they are fitted and they are both the same way as the diagram.

Can seals leak around their seating as well as from the centre bore? My prop shaft seals had brown corrosion (rust?) on the centre bore but my drive shaft seals have white corrosion (salt?) around the outside.
