Mercury gear selecting

Just changed power head on a merc V6'

Is it possible to rotate the gear selector in gear case in such a way that forward and reverse get messed up?
My control is push forward boat goes backwards !!!!! Funny not, I know that I can change it on control box, but it was fine before,
Was just messing with a 200hp lump and gear box , on my leg,
Is it fine to leave it as is , and change control direction, or does it need rotating in the box?

Curious to know, or are newer engines selected in a different direction to older models.

Have you a contra rotating gearbox (for left & right mounting)

Just beware reverse gears are not as strong as forwards if you change it at the controls

Is it a rotating connection between the top of the engine & gearbox? If so the box springs into forward when not held elsewhere by the selector. If the controls are in neutral when you reassemble it the cam is all out of sync.

Try and reassemble with the selector in fwd.
