Mercury 6hp 2 stroke 1997 thermostat

I am in the process of changing the impeller of my engine and it was not pumping water on sunday. It had been sitting since November. The impeller looks rough so I have ordered one however it should pump some water. I have opened the thermostat housing and inside is a very clogged waterway which I have now cleaned. Should the thermostat lift out because it's looking rather seized in? I am sure when I last ran it the tell tale spouted water straight away but not now. Could the thermostat be just gunked up? Any advice appreciated.

Cheers

No the thermostat should restrict the water to a drip until it opens and you will get a full flow of water then it will open and close when the engine is running to regulate the engine temperature. The thermostat should be free and not seized in. Hope this helps.

Thanks. I have given it a good squirt of wd40 to see if that tidies things up a bit and will have another play at the weekend. Cheers

After some investigation I managed to get the old thermostat out after quite a bit of work. I think I have found why the tell tale is not working.
