mariner/ yamaha 55el 2cyl wont go forward

I borrowed a Yamaha / Mariner motor and the forward gear just makes a clicking sound quite high up in forward gear, even if you turn it by hand, however reverse is fine. The selector seems to be travelling to the end of the shaft etc.Anybody have any ideas??

Open the cowl and see when you move the selector if it's set correctly

If the control cable is screwed on to the clevis to far or not far enough

You could also disconnect the control cable clevis and move the lever by hand to see if it'll go into gear, then see when the clevis needs to be for proper engagement

Assuming it's on remotes? Otherwise ignore the above

Cheers

It could also be the rod coming up from the gearbox that is adjusted wrong as well, there a stud joining type nut that screws apart to allow the lower unit to be removed, if this stud nut isn't screwed in properly it could affect gear shifts ...

As its a borrowed unit, best to ask the owner first, it might be a "feature " :-)

Thanks Ron,
It was working for the first day, when I borrowed it.
The selector seems to be going to the end of its travel, however I will check the gearbox rod.
