The first thing to do is disconnect the pipe where it comes through the casing and see if it works then. They normally have a bit of sh*t stuck just on the plastic part that comes through the shell, failing that blow or put an airline up the pipe to blast the sh*t away.

We carry a bit of brazing rod so we can poke the c**p out of the tell tale if it gets bunged up with salt (or sand if someone has a whoopsey and runs over a bank! )

1) Does water come out of the exhaust and how hot is what comes out?

2)What state is the rest of the waterpump-baseplate, gaskets and cover?

3) Are you sure it's not overheating (does your temp gauge/overheat alarm work ok?)

4) Is it 4 or 2 stroke?

5)Has it been flushed after use properly?

Do you hear the alarm for a couple of seconds when you turn the key on?

How long have you had it running on muffs? Long enough for the thermostat to open? Are we talking about the exhaust point on the back of the leg or what comes out of the prop centre on muffs?

Your alarm isn't working then. You may be overheating. Have you been running it all year without a freshwater flush?

I should have asked before-What controls have you got? Something like these?

The original mercury commander controls have an alarm built in which self-tests when you turn the key on.

If it's a mercury sidemount it should have the alarm. If nothing else you need to get the alarm fixed or you won't be able to tell if there's a problem.

it COULD be perfectly ok-as long as your pee stream is working-but with neither working you need to address it.

My merc four stroke 90 does not self test when switched on, and never has since new despite. My 50 four stroke merc does but not the 90.
Doesnt mean the alarm doesnt work however cos when the original engine blew its oil seal in the oil pump after three weeks it made a helluva noise-followed by a siezed engine and a lotta oil everywhere. A fault not unknown to merc and mariner dealers and I have met others to who the same thing has happened. Mine replaced by sowester and then again by Barrus but thats a long story!

Short the overheat sensor direct to the block and it'll trip the alarm.
