mariner 6hp 4 stroke exhaust gas

While running my engine in a water tub in neutral gear I notice the exhaust gas exiting from the rubber grommet on the leg and from the front where the lower housing attaches to the leg. It also exits from the two relief holes in the leg of course. Engine pumps water strongly from the telltale. I had thought most of the gas should exit behind the propeller. Engine was professionally serviced last year and gave no trouble up to this

I previously had a Mariner 30 efi, which did the same, particularly when cold, and always on first start up after winterising. I’m not sure if it was exhaust, or fumes from burning off protection spray around engine. I’m sure someone here will be able to clarify, but I never had any major problems throughout owning and running it.

Did a test today with the engine in raised position. I poured water into the prop hub and it poured out in two channels in the join between leg and lower gear housing and a small hole in the gear case housing. All these I had not noticed before. So I guess all the exhaust passages are free. including the one behind the prop
