Mariner 30hp 2T idle

The late 80's/early 90's Mariner on the SR4 sings and runs sweetly. It even idles, for about four seconds.
Then dies. Restarts immediately. Fast Idle lever on controls lets it idle faster and stay alive, but is that the solution, a faster idle?
Is there idle mixture for me to tend to?
All else is perfect.......new fuel 75:1 premix. Idles perfectly on mufflers, just not when out of gear in the water.

Try turning up the idle screw a bit , it should around where the cable connects to on the throttle.

clean the carb pay particular attention to the idle jet and float hight, and I would run it on a 50:1 mix check to make sure that it is tuned properly as per the service manual, set the mix screw one and a half turns out from lightly seated.

Ok, it's all shafts and no cables. There is a sprung stop screw on the throttle body just behind the air filter which seems to determine idle. Have turned in one turn and today it idled for about two minutes before dying. Fired up again immediately. But at increased idle the gears crunch a bit. It will idle away in gear forever. But in neutral just seems to miss after a bit and cut out. Idle mixture maybe? Where is that? Or something else.
Carb has been off, cleaned, float level sorted, full service, new plugs and control cables. Just the godforsaken idle out of gear is a pain.

Good quality fuel? Also run it on 50:1 not 75:1 and use a good quality oil.

It still looks like carb trouble, a rule of thumb check to see if a 2/str is setup properly is nuetral to fwd in gear a rev change of about 200rpm, but it wont work with four stroke because they are, or most of them are controled electronicaly
