Identifying the age of an engine

How do you find out how old an engine is (other than asking whoever is selling it!). I've read somewhere (on here I think) that the last two digits of a serial number is the year of manufacture.

I need to find out how old a 70hp tohatsu is. Where will I find the serial number? What else can I determine from the serial number?

Any help/advice greatly received.

Cheers

Tim

You can se it as you say on the serial number, but i am not sure that all engines has the 2 last digits.
Thats the year of build but i think not sure, that the year of engine is the year after what the digits say.

Hi i know its not tohatsu but this is how to tell the year for a OMC!
I found this on google a few years ago! you could always try Andy Clark at http://www.bosunsmate.co.uk/ I'm shore he could tell you.
Nick

Johnson/Evinrude outboards from 1981 forward uses a two letter code derived from the
word Introduces to establish the model year. See matrix below.

I N T R O D U C E S
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0

Example: 1998 Evinrude 115 = E115TLECS the EC represents 98 or 1998.
