Help....35hp - Re starting issue

Hi All,

Firstly I am as new to forums as I am to boating and apologise in advance for my terminology etc. Also hope I have posted this into the correct forum...

I have purchased 3.6mtr Rib complete with a Selva 35hp electric start outboard. I use the rib for sea fishing and a bit of beach hopping ( Not so glamorous as it sounds as we are in Scotland ... I have had the engine fully serviced about 3 months ago and had the starter solinoid replaced, comments from the mechanic was that, " it was a good clean engine that had not had a lot of previous use".

When I run the boat either for a short 5-10 minute journey or for a longer 25-30 min run and then turn off the engine, occasionally it will not start again, it sounds as if it is going to and sometimes does but when you engage gear it cuts out. I have checked the fuel and the fuel bulb to ensure that it is full etc..... Then maybe after 10-20 attempts it burst into life and off we go again without any problem. We can stop start again a number of times without any issues but then can be hit with the same problem and symptoms.... When sea fishing we need to start stop as we are drifting.....

I would be very grateful if anyone can offer any suggestions, many thanks in advance.

Do you give the fuel bulb a good squeeze before trying to start?

You shouldn't need to touch the revs, is the priming bulb firm when you try it?

What about choke, is it auto or manual from the key?

I have the same engine and had a similar problem - sometimes started sometimes just turned over and over but when it did start ran great. We found two problems. The first was one of the plug leads was pulled slightly out of the thingy that pushes into the plug - easy fix pushed it back in. The second was that the electric choke was not working so have to now take off lid and manually operate choke when needed.

my selva 60hp dose this sometimes,
but i find if you start it then while its ticking over give the fuel bulb a squeeze before you put it in gear its fine.

What are your plugs like? When you stop the engine - try pulling the plugs. Sounds like the engine is being flooded if they're wet. Guarantee if the fuel bulb is hard, and the plugs have the right gap and are nice and dry, she'll fire into life. Let us know.

Do you use the same choke / throttle combo for a warm start than a cold?

My old Suz used to need the choke if you left it for more than about 5 mins, if it was a quick stop (e.g to swap to he other fuel tank, so everything still warm) it would start without choke or throttle.
